Picture the Past
A series of workshops were held to create these Story Quilts. Initially in the two schools to collect drawings from the children, stories were told to them by residents of two sheltered housing complexes and film from the Norfolk Archive gave insight into a way of life outside their experience.
A series of colourful and expressive drawings provided information to develop the next stage.
Workshops for all ages and abilities were held in community centres. The drawn images are translated into stitched form, learning and conversation takes place.
Story telling is used and enjoyed at all stages of the process, whether by children, adults or professional story tellers and authors.
All participants had opportunity to interpret the images in their work. Detail images show the level of skill and care taken in doing this.
The unifying element in the design is of dyed recycled wool blankets and yarn, with blanket stitching done by hand.
Finished quilts are now owned by the two schools and used for story telling and play opportunities. They may be added to in future.
This project provided opportunity for all ages and abilities to share in learning, understanding and enjoying each other’s lives and experiences.
