St Ives, Generations together - 2011

Generations together

A series of workshops were held to create this Story Quilt with Eastfield School and Rheola Care Home, St Ives.

The children were taken on walks round St Ives by a local historian. They collected drawings of the ancient buildings and stories were told to them by residents and making took place in the garden of the care home,

A series of colourful and expressive drawings provided information to develop the next stage.

The drawn images are translated into stitched form, learning and conversations take place.

Story telling is used and enjoyed at all stages of the process, whether by children, adults or professional story tellers and authors.

All participants had opportunity to interpret the images in their work. Detail images show the level of skill and care taken in doing this.

The unifying element in the design is of dyed recycled wool blankets and yarn, with blanket stitching done by hand.

Finished quilts are now owned by the school and used for story telling and play opportunities. They may be added to in future.

This project provided opportunity for all ages and abilities to share in learning, understanding and enjoying each other’s lives and experiences.

Story Teller Marion Leeper helped to launch the story quilt with a collection of wonderful tales, mythical and historically accurate. Her article about this project is available here
