Fenland and Ouse Washes Story Quilt

Recycled Blankets and story telling

2015 -2016

This project was linked to the exhibition 'Secret Life of Ely Cathedral' with OuseLife Drawing Group

I designed the story quilt project and coordinated a series of drawing and story telling workshops in the region, including  including story telling sessions with Marion Leeper in Ely Cathedral.

Participants provided drawings and ideas for the imagery, volunteers helped with hand stitched elements.

Images conveyed include fantastical and mythical creatures, historic and contemporary fen people in villages and towns. The cathedral labyrinth is the centre of the story quilt.

Story telling, drawing and collaborating

The Fenland and Ouse Washes Story Quilt project was supported by a grant from the Community Heritage Fund through Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership.

This story quilt is used for community groups with links to the area. It helps to share memories and history between different age groups.

The quilt is made of recycled blankets, stitched onto a heavy-duty canvas backing.

The quilt is oval, 5 metres diameter at the widest point and weighs 15 kilos.

It is stored in a waterproof box with wheels and must always be returned in the box.
