About Fair Trade: Material Matters

Fair Trade: Material Matters originated as part of a research project and was initially presented at the Second Moscow Biennale in 2007, highlighting the varied responses to art, artists and how they are valued.

Fair Trade: Material Matters combines hand drawn self portraits by contributors of all ages and skill levels, these are hand stitched by Jane Frost in woad dyed yarn onto undyed recycled wool blankets. This project brings people and places together combining original artwork, elements of sustainable materials, environmental and community art projects.

I have been really proud to present this project at several venues in UK. This ongoing work is ideal for a wide variety of venues, presentation and exhibition varies depending on the host venue and at each place more portraits are collected. Conversations about the value and worth of materials, art, and self image take place. Especially significant since the COVID19 pandemic has changed our experiences of community.

The first exhibition and workshops in 2021 were held at Arbury Community Centre, Cambridge, in conjunction with The Cambridge Ethnic Community Forum, residents, students and workers in the Cambridge area of UK.

There will be a new website published soon, to see the current project website see http://fairtradematerialmatters.org/

This project has been supported by UK Heritage Lottery Funding, Cambridgeshire County Libraries, UEA, Norwich University of The Arts, and individual supporters.
